Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.– Hipprocrates
What we eat, what we put into our body is the foundation for our good or not so good health. Good nutrition is so important to our optimal health. Hippocrates who is the father of Western medicine originally coined the term, “Food is Medicine”. He believed that eating wholesome food was the basis for good health. Almost 2500 years ago Hippocrates said “Leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can heal the patient with food.”
All around the world, centuries ago, Health practitioners and Doctors were aware of the benefits of using food as medicine to heal the body and now based on research it is evident that food plays a major role on how you feel on a day to day basis and on your health.
Hippocrates believed that bad eating habits and poor nutrition brought on illness and that if people learned good eating habits then optimum health would be restored. Many years before Doctors and medicine were commonly used, the tribal elders would use plants and healing herbs for their community and food would be used prescriptively to bring about healing. As the years went by man moved away from the healing power of nature and moved towards prescribed packaged synthetic drugs and artificial remedies to help with illness.
Unfortunately, we have shifted away from natural remedies and have turned to a diet of fatty, sugar laden, and processed food and the consequences are that rates of disease and obesity have increased significantly.
If food has the power to prevent much of the chronic illness we have today then it makes sense to change our diets to use it to our advantage to not only restore and heal the body but also to prevent illness. We can actually heal the world one person at a time by choosing wisely what we put into our bodies, by eating Nutrient Dense Foods.

Drugs are important and useful in life threatening situations, however if long term conditions can be managed with lifestyle and diet changes then using food as medicine must be considered as a initial way of tackling the problem and preventing future health issues.
Scientists and health practitioners are now uncovering the benefits of Nutrigenomics and the idea that food is information that speaks to our genes and triggers messages that create disease or health. There are many factors that can bring about disease such as the health of our gut, nutrition, stress, hormone balance, and the importance of food and detoxification.
