I had no real problems with my weight until after the birth of my first daughter when my thyroid changed my metabolism and I found it nearly impossible to lose an ounce. I became obsessed with my weight and spent the next decade obsessed with the number on the scale and with the number of calories I’d burned and eaten. I’d try a new diet almost every week. Most were very restrictive, no carbohydrate diets, low carbohydrate diets, alkaline diet, macrobiotic diet, vegetarian diet, weight watchers, Herbal Magic, food combining, and many others. And my latest was gluten free. I would start an exercise program but would never stick to anything long enough as I would set my goals too high and not able able to stick to them. I would fail, fall off my ” diet” and stop exercising again. This yo-yo dieting cycle continued and continued.
That was until I starting learning about two things, one was Intuitive Eating and the other was Nutrient Dense Eating. I am learning to understand why eating foods that are nutrient dense is the best way to get healthy and lose weight but I also am learning to listen to my body and what it actually feels good eating. By listening to my body I have discovered that the nutrient dense foods make me and my body feel good and in fact much better than all the junk or unhealthy foods. I am also beginning to drop my obsession with counting calories and fat grams and instead I am learning about which foods are the healthiest and most nutrient dense and am eating them as much as possible every day.
And it has started to change my life. I am realizing how grateful for my body I am. So far I have so much more energy. Not only is the food fueling my body better, but my head space is so much more free,expansive, and happy because I am no longer constantly adding up the calories I eat or worrying about what to eat. I was so confused about what to eat that I just gave up and ate anything.
I have started telling others about Nutrient Dense Eating along with Intuitive Eating, but they seem to think, as I used to that this is just another fad diet however I know that it is not. For now I will stay focused on this wonderful way of eating. I have done research on both Intuitive Eating and Nutrient Dense Eating and I am aware that there are studies for both.
I have just began my Nutrient Dense Eating and Intuitive Eating path and have already noticed some differences-I am less frantic about my weight and only weigh myself every other week. I have spend many years on and off counting calories and I have stopped this completely. I am free from my obsession about my weight and I am truly grateful for this. This is giving me a sense of freedom, and I not only feel in control of my eating, but am beginning to feel ” healthier”.
I realize that life is too short to spend it weighing myself obsessively, counting calories, or spending hours doing workouts I hate. We are all much more than how we look and beating ourselves up to look a certain way can never result in well true health or well-being.
So if any of this sounds like you, than consider giving Intuitive Eating and Nutrient Dense Eating a try. You might be surprised at how much your life opens up when you start eating in this healthy way and how wonderful you feel. I am so glad I have given it a try 🙂
